A Case Study on an Arts Therapy¡¯s Effectiveness on Improving Attention of Adolescents with Mild Intellectual Disability

Abstract
This study is to examine the effects of arts therapy used Orff music therapy and Mandala art therapy for the attention of adolescents with mild intellectual disability. The subjects in this study were 5 adolescents with mild intellectual disability in S girls¡® high school at S district in Gyeongbuk. This program consisted of 40 therapy sessions in total; each session lasts 40 minutes and three times a week for 16 weeks from March 10, 2014 to June 23, 2014. Before and after the whole program, FAIR(Frankfruter Aufmerksamkeits Inventar) test and the Harris & Harris Grid were carried out for the group. It was found out that there was a significant enhancement(p<.05) on the attention of adolescents with mild intellectual disability. Also, the results indicated that the therapy was effective for enhancing the selective attention(P) score, quality control(Q) scores and continuation(C) score in FAIR test. Arts therapy is effective for the improvement in the attention of adolescents with mild intellectual disability.
